What the Hec is a Cattle-Call? More Parent Advice for Child & Teen Models Starting Out

Huh?

What do they mean, a cold call? And a cattle-call? And an open-call? Is it the same as an audition? Is a reading different? What's my cue? And, please God, what do I put in my tote bag when I finally do get my first modeling gig? By the way, why is it always a gig and not a job, when it comes to modeling?

Answers to questions like these, and many others, are part of what kids (and eventually their parents) learn from modeling school. Once you know the industry terminology you are no longer a novice. Knowing the lingo is one way to set yourself apart from the clueless masses.

Bluffing

The old "Fake it till you Make it' adage is another approach. When you are the one in the room without a clue it is time to listen carefully and watch those around you. Almost always, where parents gather, with their children, waiting to be discovered or to find work; you will be able to find at least one parent sympathetic to your situation.

Competition

Look for a mom or dad that seems approachable and receptive to conversation. Other parents love to talk about their child's accomplishments and hear praise. Keeping that in mind may result in scoring an ally.

Don't forget the high level of competition in today's industry. Parents can be fearful that your child will get a role that they want for their child. Remember, most parts (even in fashion shows) are still cast by a physical description or appearance. Therefore, when looking for an ally who can help you through this phase; pick someone with a child whose look is different than your child's. I suggest a parent with a child the opposite sex of yours, or in another age category, or ethnicity, Their child's look should be opposite of your child's look. More about this subject is coming right up.

Fashion Commodity

Your child or teen needs a "Look". In part, nature has assigned them the characteristics that determine their look. But, the genius of a good agent or modeling school is transforming that look. Taking it beyond a narrow margin and morphing it into limitless other possibilities. This is done through makeup, hair, style, presentation, acting skills, a good book, a versatile comp card and marketing skills on the part of the parent and agent. Just remember, the more "types" your child looks like the more job opportunities they will have.

Faith and Courage

I know as an agent of almost ten years, this is a tough business. But I want to give you some realistic hope. This business like any other is a matter of good marketing and skills. What society dictates as "beauty" is constantly changing. However, inner beauty remains the same. We all love to be around people that make us feel good and positive. People that have manners and are professional get ahead faster. "Connections" are often friendships that have been cultivated over the years. So, keep up the faith, keep trying and don't take it personal when you don't get the gig this time around just keep going for it, and be at the next audition. Good Luck All. I checked out your website. Very nice, clean. I have a question, what about very young models being over encouraged? I worry about that a bit. Thanks for great info.
